Here are some historical facts taken from the Mosinee Mill Centenary, a newspaper that was put together after their 100-Year Anniversary in 2011. 

Olai Bache-Wiig was a well-known engineer educated in Norway and then Germany. He was hired by the Wausau Group in 1909. The group included Karl Mathie (the first President of the Wausau Sulphate Fibre Company), Louis Dessert, and F.P. Stone to design, build, and operate the new Wausau Sulphate Fibre Company. Construction began in May of 1909 and on June 1, 1910 the Wausau Sulphate Fibre Company was incorporated. The Pulp Mill started on September 1, 1911 and on November 18 our No. 1 Paper Machine put its first paper on the reel! A second paper machine was added in November 1914, and a third in 1918. Two years later, No. 3 Paper Machine set a world speed record, turning out paper at a sustained rate of 1,000 feet per minute. We, of course, run much faster than that today! Our fourth paper machine was added years later in October 1964 when it began production of high-grade, machine-glazed specialty papers.

The Wausau Sulphate Fibre Company changed its name to Mosinee Paper Mills Company in 1928, allowing its name to match its location. The merger of Wausau Paper Mills Company and Mosinee Paper Mills was completed in 1997 and in December of that year the name was changed to Wausau-Mosinee Paper Corporation. We later became Wausau Papers, then Expera Specialty Products, then Ahlstrom-Munksjo, and now just Ahlstrom.
